Robinson, Jason: Resonant Geographies

Reed specialist Jason Robinson has eight albums as a band leader to his credit including three as the Jason Robinson’s Janus Ensemble with his latest titled Resonant Geographies. The ensemble includes:

Jason Robinson (tenor and soprano saxophones, alto flute)
JD Parran (alto and contra alto clarinets, bass flute)
Oscar Noriega (Bb and bass clarinets, alto saxophone)
Marty Ehrlich (bass clarinet, alto saxophone, flute)
Michael Dessen (trombone)
Bill Lowe (bass trombone, tuba)
Marcus Rojas (tuba)
Liberty Ellman (guitar)
Drew Gress (bass)
George Schuller (drums)
Ches Smith (drums, glockenspiel)

These cats are great players with an instinctive ability to capture the moment in intriguing and delightful ways. The first track “Facing East” is a case in point. A wonderful tenor sax solo leads it off before the full band bursts forth. The woodwind and brass play is exceptional. After full band mode a more introspective part ensues followed by some nice guitar work and ending with a playful horn workout. The completely spontaneous “Futures Unimagined” is very esoteric with a free form beginning and an almost unsettling background. The flute and horn work is imaginative and unrestrained as the band gets into a nice groove. With “Confluence” the tuba supplies low end depth as does the excellent bass solo. Deep tuba blasts and a wild alto clarinet solo punctuate the free from approach of “Dreaming”, another scintillating example of ensemble interplay. Bass and trombone form the basis of “Facing West”, another interesting track.

Resonant Geographies is highly recommended for those with a penchant for free form and improvisational jazz.
