Icefish: Human Hardware

Icefish is an international progressive rock/metal project which formed in 2015. Legendary drummer Virgil Donati sought the help of Alex Argento (keyboards, vocals) and Marco Sfogli (guitars) for his solo album This Is Life. The players decided to continue their musical relationship adding bassist Andrea Casali, thus Icefish was born. Their debut album is titled Human Hardware and was released in 2017.

These guys have put together an excellent album with Human Hardware. The playing is top notch, very virtuosic and technical with superb melodies and smooth vocals. Argento has an excellent voice and can soar with the best of them. He never over sings showing just the right amount of restraint and supplies these tunes with an overabundance of vocal hooks. Sure these players are great musicians and there are plenty of solos to pass around but this isn’t a showcase for ego grandstanding, it’s really about the song. The melding of the melodic with the technical as well as more atmospheric moments ensures the band has hit all the right spots. Technical chord progressions and meaty riffs highlight “Paralyzed”, an excellent beginning to the album. The keyboards are also ever present so no one element is over bearing. The technically impressive “It Begins” is another great track where the band never loses scope of the melody. The catchy vocal arrangement and guitar riffs in the title track makes for another highlight.

Icefish has made a fine debut album with Human Hardware. I think fans of heavy prog and prog metal will find much to appreciate. Give it a spin, you won’t be disappointed.
