Joachim Kühn New Trio: Love & Peace

I first became familiar with the Joachim Kühn New Trio upon hearing their debut album titled Beauty & Truth released in 2016. The new album is titled Love & Peace and like the previous release the German pianist returns with Chris Jennings (bass) and Eric Schaefer (drums).

The trio have the art of subtlety down to a science showing incredible restraint throughout the album. These are mostly Kühn compositions with one tune added by each member and a couple of covers including The Doors’ “The Crystal Ship�. This continues Kühn’s appreciation for the psychedelic rock band; the last album included a rendition of “The End�. And like that tune Kühn keeps the original melody intact, expanding upon it in a creative and thoughtful way. His piano work here is simply stunning. He also continues his love for Ornette Coleman’s work covering the outstanding “Night Plans�. A dreamy soundscape of whispering taps of cymbals and more fabulous piano. The melody is gorgeous and the playing inventive and inspiring. All three members leave their creative footprint, every note thoughtfully put forth paying a nice tribute to the sax legend. The title track is another highlight with Kuhn’s piano in delicate balance with the rest of the trio. The melody is really quite touching and one of the nicest on the disc.

For lovers of piano led trios Love & Peace is a must listen and comes highly recommended.
