Poe, Edgar Allan: The Black Cat

I first read Edgar Allan Poe as a very young boy and I still read him today. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is easily one of my favorite tales, but “The Black Cat” is not far behind. If you have never read this tale, this is definitely the time to catch up.

For those unfamiliar with the Spoken Arts label Cadabra Records, they do a great job giving fans new recordings of classic Gothic and horror tales that feature strong actors and musicians. In this case, the story is read by Anthony D. P. Mann, an actor already featured on Cadabra recordings. He reads in a dramatic but natural style, one that is easy to follow and to understand. He also understands what the story is doing and so puts the emphasis on the right words at the right times. It is a pleasure listening to these classic tales with Mann’s delivery.

One of the cool things about this particular recording is that it features music by Italian composer Fabio Frizzi, a musician best known for his work on The Beyond, The City of the Living Dead, and Zombi 2. He also provided the score to Kill Bill 2 and one of the Puppet Master movies. His score for “The Black Cat” follows the terror and drama of the story with such careful emphasis on events that it nearly synchs up with each plot point. Fans will definitely want to hear what he does on this recording, especially since he helps bring the story alive in creative and cool ways.

Cadabra always does a great job with the packaging for their releases. They are designed for collectors and I think fans of Poe, Frizzi, and others like them will want to add this to their collections. I get them digitally which is fine but there’s so much more in the physical product.

I’ve tried to listen to every Cadabra Records release so far. They are all worth checking out and this one is especially good because the story is so familiar and so creepy.
