Lizzy Borden: My Midnight Things
The opening track is the title track “My Midnight Things” and I’m pleased Lizzy Borden decided to introduce his new cinematic style with such a splashy song. In the 80’s Lizzy produced songs of maddening drama and metal urgency. On “Obsessed With You” you get that throwback of their dastardly days but updated with a melodic power metal that catches you off guard. This band has made a major leap forward with this infectious production combined with vocal passion delivered a la Lizzy Borden.
“Long May They Haunt Us” on the surface seems like a departure from the metal pounding of previous efforts (or previous tracks, ha) but it may only be that it contains lush harmonies and a fun drum beat that makes this un-Lizzy yet admirable in its scope of melding punk harmony and metal pop sensibilities. Poison might be jealous. “The Scar Across My Heart” is amazingly theatric in the Rocky Horror Picture sense and I can’t believe how much I am snapping my fingers. (I didn’t do this in the 80’s.)
While I loved those authentic departures “The Perfect Poison” is my Lizzy Borden from old back to kick butt and take names in every concert hall from Finland to Frisco. Further down this catalog of catatonic calliphonies “Our Love is God” is again another super number of new age Lizzy Borden slightly influenced by Nine Inch Nails with a head-chopping axe-wielding blaze of metal mayhem across the stage. This is such a creative and (I daresay) original arrangement I’d play it on the radio for like twenty-six weeks. Borden ends this album with “We Belong to the Shadows” a song similar in execution to how he opened up the album….but with an incredible twist…it has shadings of theatrical tones like Grease. On paper I imagine this all reads wild and willful but Lizzy Borden, as only they can, manage to make this a daring album of mature metal from a veteran group of players.
