Barren Altar: Entrenched in the Faults of the Earth

This is a very strong debut album from a band to watch. I’ve listened to it a few times over the last week and I like it more and more each time. Barren Altar comes from the Bay Area and have only been together for about five years. In that time, they have developed a style that mixes elements of black metal with their own spin on blackened funeral doom. I’ve listened to this album multiple times and I like it more and more with each listen. The band has a particular knack for surprising listeners with interesting shifts in tempo or a sudden turn to sadness and despair. There’s a good chance you’ve heard music like this before, but Barren Altar is good at making what they do compelling and memorable. As I write this, I’m listening to the middle section of “Call to the Waves.” It’s a great example of this band’s skill at blending heaviness with melodic moroseness. Listening to it reminds me of my own experiences swimming in the ocean and being pulled below by a powerful and unmerciful undertow. I made it out, but music like this is a soundtrack to a more tragic outcome. I liked “Call to the Waves” and “Submerged” the most because they showed off this band’s best version of blackened funeral doom. I would also recommend “The Great Awakening of Death.” This is a solid debut, one that I definitely recommend.
