Mason, Elliot: Before, Now & After

Here is another young virtuoso to wrap your ears around. Elliot Mason, specializing on the trombone released his debut album as a band leader in 2017 titled Before, Now & After. The disc contains eight tracks, four originals and three standards, all lovingly executed by Elliot and his extremely talented band.

I am almost getting tired of saying this but here we have another excellent jazz disc to give our attention to. Although only Mason’s first disc he has made a name for himself as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra along with the incomparable Wynton Marsalis who has high praise for Mason’s trombone work. The title track has a cool eerie sound, the percussion especially so, with the trombone and Sofija Knežević’s vocals intermingling in a most agreeable way. Mason’s trombone solo is absolutely superb. On John Coltranes’s “Caravan” the tandem of trombone and trumpet over Ali Jackson’s and Carlos Henriquez’s slinky grooves exhibits a dexterity that is really quite special. On the bossa nova ballad “Vulnerable”, Mason’s bass trumpet solo is just so good and on “Passion Dance” the trumpet and trombone soloists are once again at the top of their game. With “& Then There Were
