Siegel, Dan: Origins

Dan Siegel began making albums in 1980 with his first release titled Nite Ride. Twenty albums later we have the release of Origins earlier this year. This is the work of a consummate professional, very much in the vein of contemporary jazz with other genres touched upon like funk, blues, fusion and world music.

The lead off track “Rite Of Passage” sticks out with its funky bass line and bluesy jazz feel. Siegel makes his present felt almost immediately with an excellent piano solo steeped in melodicism. The ending organ solo is quite subtle and brings the track to a fitting conclusion. The upbeat mood is contrasted with the next track “When One Door Closes”. Lightly tinged Latin infused percussion and another melodic piano solo with an overall moodier vibe. Luxurious bass and piano highlight the catchy “After All”, this time including the vocals of Rogerio Jardim which offer a nice accompaniment to the piano. This one has a wonderful laid back sound and the wordless vocals are irresistible to the ears. The acoustic guitar adds another Latin element. “Lost And Found” is another upbeat melodic gem surrounded with a sumptuous groove and more catchy piano licks. On the breezy “Arabesque” the vibraphone and acoustic guitar really stand out amongst the Latin vibes whereas “Moon And Stars” is a much more mellow affair with delicate acoustic guitar and softer rhythms. The bass solo courtesy of Brian Bromberg is a definite highlight. Again, Jardim’s ethereal vocals add plenty of charm. A nice electric lead from guitarist Allen Hinds highlights “Crossing”, another fine track

Siegel and his band have made an excellent piano led jazz album with Origins. The melodies are so infectious you will be coming back for seconds, guaranteed.
