Travaglini, Stefano: Ellipse

Italian pianist/composer/multi-instrumentalist Stefano Travaglini released his first album titled The Hungarian Songbook in 2013. His sophomore effort Ellipse was recorded in September of 2016 and released in 2017. On the album Travaglini goes it alone with just him and his piano. This is a completely improvised set with his piano work taking on a bit of classical but mostly jazz inflections.

The music may be quite abstract as with the first track “The Importance of Fishing”. Intriguing stop/starts and a playing style that can be infused with both delicate finesse or more forceful intensity. On “Life” the minimalist beginning builds the melody slowly. This is a nicely flowing jazz piece, quite laidback and complex enough to satisfy those searching for something a little more involved. “The Flowering Season” is another adventurous improvisation yet highly listenable while his considerable chops are on full display in the cover of “Monk’s Mood” and the adjoining “Presences”. The disc ends with “Goodbye, For Now (Mediation)”, a whisper of delicateness with a lovely melody.

Ellipse is played with creativity, finesse and thoughtfulness. Quite a nice solo piano recording from a very talented player who clearly his passionate about his craft. Recommended.
