Bruner, Tom: Homage To A Hero

Tom Bruner is a jazz guitarist who has been involved in music all his life. He is well known for his work in movies and television where he has been an arranger, conductor and musical director. On his latest album titled Homage To A Hero Bruner pays tribute to jazz legend Wes Montgomery.

On this double disc set Bruner tackles nineteen Montgomery ballads, played with thoughtfulness and sensitivity. A lot of care has been taken with the playing and arrangements, every chord and note has its place. To go along with Bruner’s free flowing and gentle chords and notes are lovely orchestrations he also arranged. There are no other credits listed on the album so I am not sure how many instruments Bruner played other than his thirteen string guitar. This is a smooth jazz affair, remember these are all ballads so you need to be in the right frame of mind to give this a proper listen. The light string orchestrations and keyboards are a nice accompaniment to Bruner’s sensitive and thoughtful guitar stylings.

This is an extremely slow paced album, as to be expected, so be prepared to relax and give way to the music. If you do that I think many fans of jazz guitar will like what they hear.
