Lordi: Sexorcism

For those who have lived under a rock or may live in a part of the world where European metal doesn’t thrive, Lordi is a Finnish hard rock and melodic heavy metal band, originally formed in 1992 by the band's lead singer, songwriter, visual art designer, costume maker, and massive KISS fan Mr Lordi. Famously Lordi took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 and won the whole competition as the first and only winner from Finland, with all-time record breaking points at the time in Eurovision history. The band has even been able to tour the UK on a couple of occasions since and whilst not exactly pulling huge crowds did respectable business. I caught them at Manchester Ritz and loved them.

Twelve years down the line Sexorcism is the band’s ninth album and is despite the band’s claims of being, 'full-on and uncensored shot of Lordi brand hard rock and roll', remarkably similar to the rest but with added puerile lyrics.

A gander at the title track reveals the following:
"Pretty girl, her head swirls
Hot as hell, she moans and hurls
Eye's turn white, keep her tight
She's red eagle open wide
There's a demon possessor
Blasting in her from within
I slip my fingers inside her
Lure the beast and make her come out�

Really? In the wake of Weinstein and the #Metoo movement some of the lyrics strike the most tone deaf erm tone possible. This is a shame because as always, Mr Lordi and his chums have a hook around every corner and a riff within reach. I’m sure that some may suggest that the lyrics are tongue-in-cheek but at this point in evolution a lyrical rethink might be in order just because it is the right thing to do.
