Mathisen, Per: Sounds Of 3

Norwegian bassist Per Mathisen has teamed up with fellow countryman Frode Alnaes (guitars) and Cuban Giraldo Piloto (drums and percussion) to give us his latest release Sounds Of 3. Known as ‘The Bass Viking�, Mathisen has appeared as a guest musician on a number of recordings including works by Bill Evans, Gary Husband and Bill Bruford just to name a few. After listening to Sounds Of 3 it is easy to hear why Mathisen is so highly regarded. This is an excellent jazz fusion album. His bass playing is exemplary and whether providing a steady rhythm or as a solo instrument, his tone is all over this album. Mathisen also does a fine job of sharing the spotlight as each musician is given ample room to strut their stuff. This power trio plays with real gusto beginning with the groove laden “The C Sharp Man� and continuing with the rocking “Rabbagast II� with its excellent drum intro and superb elastic-like bass tones before slowing it down with the more serene “Maestro H. Sunde�. On “Kick Ab Shuffle� the bass intro is really cool (you just need to hear it) before the bluesy rock riffs kick it into high gear. Blues, rock and fusion come together for some outstanding interplay amongst all three musicians. Listen for the superb skin work between Alnaes’ fiery guitar chords. The fretless bass intro in “Pavane�, originally penned by Gabriel Fauré and the catchy fusion of “Skumringstimen� where all three musician’s playing is off the charts are more highlights.

Mathisen and his cohorts have made an outstanding fusion album. Let’s hope this trio lights it up again soon.
