Electric Moon: Stardust Rituals

A new Electric Moon album will always get the attention of psychedelic space rock fans. The latest from the German trio is titled Stardust Rituals, their fifth studio long player amongst various live recordings and compilations.

The band consists of Sula Bassana (guitars, electric sitar, Mellotron, organs, electric piano, effects), Komet Lulu (bass, bass synth, vocals, space echo, effects) and Marcus (drums).

I first became familiar with the band upon reviewing their 2015 release Theory of Mind, an excellent slice of trippy space music. Their new album continues the trio’s reliable forays into space music and they sound great doing it. Trippy walls of sound, fuzz soaked soundscapes and psychedelic jamming with an ample use of Mellotron, organ and sitar ensures a cosmic ride through the galaxy at warp speed for anyone willing to take the trip. There are only four tracks but at over forty-five minutes you can be rest assured of many extended jams of spacey goodness. The first track “The Loop� builds slowly with a heavy dose of organ and a repeating motif that the band does so well, putting the listener in a hypnotizing trance if you’re not careful. Late ‘60s Floyd and Hawkwind come to mind at various times. “Stardust (The Picture)�, previously released as live material, is another great track with a doomy guitar figure, distant sounding lead vocals that contribute to the spacey vibe and a distorted wall of sound that adds to the heavy helping of fuzz. With “Astral Hitch Hike� Bassana’s electric sitar plays a dominant role and is a little more laid back than the previous track.

The last track is the twenty-two plus minute epic “(You Will) Live Forever Now� and it is excellent. The music settles into a trance like state with psychedelic electric piano, trippy guitar and sitar and a steady beat. The guitar builds with some added heft and the soft vocals adds to the mysterious sound. This is just a fabulous space rock jam.

Stardust Rituals is a mesmerizing space rock trip that all fans of the genre will want to take. If you are a fan of the band this is a no brainer. If you haven’t dipped your ears into Electric Moon I urge you to give Stardust Rituals a spin. It’s a trip you’ll want to take again and again.
