Sometimes, you just can't keep a good band down...despite many stops and starts throughout their career, Swedish doom legends Candlemass just keep on keepin' on, and their latest studio effort, House of Doom, a 4 track, 20-minute affair, shows why they still have so much to offer the metal world. Coming two years after their last EP Death Thy Lover, House of Doom thrills just as much as most of this bands catalog does. Vocalist Mats Levén has fit like a glove with Candlemass, his commanding delivery soaring over the menacing riffs and rhythmic chug on the excellent opening title track, and his mystical roar cuts through the massive arrangements of "Flowers of Deception" like a scythe. This is epic doom in the grand Candlemass tradition folks! The more folky "Fortuneteller" sees gentle acoustic guitar strains supporting Levén's anguished wail, while the brutal "Dolls on a Wall" closes things out in dirge-like splendor, the riffs enormous, the lead guitar molten, and the drums pounding. Quite a cool instrumental to exit with here.
Word from the Candlemass camp is that House of Doom is the precursor to a full length album to be released later in 2018. If the quality is up to the par that we see here, we are in store for something truly special.
