Free To Rock (2 DVD edition)

Free To Rock is a music documentary narrated by Kiefer Sutherland that explores the beginnings of rock and roll music behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union. The film provides various interviews of Soviet rock artists who give insight into what a musician’s life was like in Eastern Europe. The film covers the time directly after WWII to the ending of the Cold War in the early ‘90s. Snippets of interviews from the likes of Jimmy Carter, Billy Joel, The Scorpions and many others provide much insight towards the issue. This is a really interesting show and causes one to think just how good we have it in the Western world where we are free to live the life we want. In the ‘50s,‘60s and '70s in the Soviet Union this was a much different scenario as young people and artists were constantly under surveillance, especially if you were a hippie or were viewed as the counterculture. Some great little nuggets of information to be had.

The profound influence of The Beatles, the band Flowers, one of the first bands in the Soviet Union to play rock music and others of the day certainly had a major impact and paved the way for the artists we see and hear in Russia today. It just goes to show how important music is to the fabric of our lives and society in general.

Also included is a bonus DVD titled Rockin’ The Kremlin, an in depth look at the making of the film. Interesting stuff indeed.

If you want to learn more about the impact rock and roll has had in our world I urge you to give this film some attention. It will be well worth a look.
