Black Capes, The: All These Monsters

The Black Capes are a new band hailing from Athens, Greece, formed by their lead vocalist Alexander S Wamp who also does vocals for the sludge metal band Poltergeist who have four albums to their credit.

The band’s first album is titled All These Monsters and as you would expect from the album title, as well as the song titles, this is fairly dark stuff with a Gothic hard rock sound reminiscent of bands like The Sisters Of Mercy and Type O Negative. Although I am not an expert on the genre, I have always really liked Sisters Of Mercy so I was keen to hear this new platter.

After a couple of spins it is fair to say this is a solid and enjoyable disc. It took me a bit to get used to Wamps’ vocal delivery, very low and almost guttural, but after a while the vocals and music meshed together quite well. He actually has a fairly melodic voice and doesn’t avert to extreme vocals, although does come pretty close occasionally. The short intro “The Invite” begins the album with eerie sound effects leading directly into the heavy riffs of the gloomy and intense “Sarah The Witch”. “Wolfchild” is slower with a doomy sound and is again quite ominous in places with some well-placed effects. The tempo picks up with the catchy hard rock of “Purple Heart” followed by the slow and heavy “Now Rise”. The title track features some of the best riffs on the disc as well as a ripping guitar solo.

All These Monsters is solid stuff from The Black Capes. If you dig riff based gothic hard rock you should give these guys and gal a listen.

Released on the German label darkTunes.
