Black Salvation: Uncertainty Is Bliss

Uncertainty Is Bliss is the new album from the German psychedelic hard rock trio calling themselves Black Salvation, who are comprised of Uno Bruniusson, formerly of In Solitude and Grave Pleasures and currently of Death Alley, on drums, guitarist/vocalist Paul Schlesier, and bassist Birger Schwidop. They find themselves on Relapse Records, a label more known for a roster of extreme metal acts, but oddly enough, with their dark and mysterious music, it seems like a marriage made in heaven, or hell for that matter. "In a Casket's Ride" opens things up in jagged, psychedelic fashion, the jangly guitar riffs and fat grooves cascading under yearning vocals, while "Floating Torpid" shows off thunderous bass alongside some crisp riffs for a sound that seems jettisoned straight out of 1969. "Breathing Hands" is like a head on collision between early Rolling Stones and Hawkwind (imagine that!), and with "A Direction is Futile", "Grey River", and "Getting Slowly Lost", Black Salvation conjure up not only the legendary British space rockers, but also The Doors, Pink Fairies, Jefferson Airplane, and The Move.

If a psychedelic trip meant to take you back to the late '60s/early '70s music scene sounds like something you'd want to experience, Uncertainly is Bliss is a ride well worth taking. From the production values, the musicianship, as well as the songwriting, this one is straight out of a time capsule from 1970.
