From Kansas City hails Hyborian, who have just released their debut album from Season Mist, titled Vol.1. Fairly short at barely 30-minutes, Vol. 1 though is a powerful opening statement, the six songs on display here showing an assortment of classic metal, stoner, and prog leanings from this young act who seem to have a bright future ahead of them. Bits of High on Fire, Mastodon, and Metallica pop up here and there, tracks such as "As Above, So Below" and "Maelstrom" contain a wealth of furious guitar riffs, pounding drums, and anthemic vocals, while "Blood for Blood" takes you all the way back to Mastodon's first two albums, the blending of hardcore and heavy prog quite prevalent and packing a punch. The galloping "Dead Lies Dreaming" takes the band into some fist pumping classic metal territory, as does the blistering battle hymn "Ajna", and the band close the show here with the bruising "Dross", a real riff-fest that ends things on a real high note.
Hyborian are off to a great start here with Vol. 1, and though you get the feeling that they are still trying to find themselves in spots, this is a heavy album that just screams at the potential to come from this talented outfit.
