Kettlespider: Kettlespider
Just what is a Kettlespider anyway? According to the band it’s “a terrifying and sometimes terrifying 5-legged beast native to Melbourne, Australia. Performs instrumental music " inspired by the progressive rock of the seventies, but played with a modern fusion-metal punch.”
The band released their first album Avadante in 2012. Five years later we get their sophomore self-titled release. This is the first I have heard the band which includes:
Simon Wood (drums)
Haris Boyd-Gerny (guitars)
Scott Ashburn (guitars)
Geoffrey Fyfe (keyboards)
Colin Andrews (bass)
With:
Fabian Acuña (trumpet on tracks 2 and 5)
Here is another excellent disc from 2017. The band play instrumental progressive rock and metal with just a hint of fusion in some of the guitar parts. At times the heavier shredding has a Satriani feel and the riffs in general are outstanding. The tempo changes are well done and never break the flow of the music. Its technical stuff but one never gets the sense the band are showing off just for the sake of it. It all makes perfect sense and the melodies are superb throughout the eight tracks.
My favourite track is the outstanding “Anubis” beginning with meaty guitar riffs soon leading into an ambient section with the trumpet taking on an ethereal tone. The riffs start again, including some shredding supplemented with keyboards adding just the right amount of colour. Another part with jazzy trumpet, sumptuous keyboards and a superbly played guitar solo with lots of feel. Who says instrumental music lacks a soul.
“Break the Safe Pt. 1” and “Pt. 2” are also highly recommended. The heavier riffs reminded me of recent Anathema’s more heavier moments. I love the use of keyboards as well, particularly in “Pt. 2”.
There are six other highlights you should listen to if instrumental prog is in your wheelhouse. Another highly recommended release from 2017.
