Dark Buddha Rising: II
This EP has two tracks, each of which takes up one side of a record. Since I'm listening to it digitally, I don't have the experience of turning the record over, but I sort of which I could have. The music needs that short break, the one where you deliberately turn things over in the hope for more. I've never listened to Dark Buddha Rising before, so I don't know what else they've done, but I found it fascinating. The band, a self-described psychedelic doom act, does a nice job building things up through repetition and difference. Things generally build slowly but there are some transitions that are more dramatic than others. The best thing about the music is the ways it just keeps building toward something hypnotic and strange. I also liked the chanting vocals and the overall sense of gloom. Dark Buddha Rising is definitely a doom band, but they differ from others in the way they channel different influences into something marked by anticipation and despair. There's also something freaky about parts of it. Some of the chanting on the second track was a bit unnerving. But that's what gives this release its edge. It takes risks with chants and ambient sounds to create something compelling. I liked track 2 a little better than track 1, even if track 1 is more invested in the doom side of this band. Track 2 is the more psychedelic and experimental of the two. This is definitely a band to check out.
