Weathered Statues: Borderlands

I wasn't sure what to expect from Weathered Statues. I knew the band was formed in 2017 and that their music ranges from pop to something closer to post-punk. What I wasn't expecting, though, was those opening notes. If you listen to them—and if you like 80s alternative music—you're likely to hear a cross between bands like New Order, Cocteau Twins, and a bit of The Cure. The band identifies Killing Joke, Xmal Deutschland, and Souxsie and the Banshees as influences. Lol Tohurst, who co-founded the cure also remixed "Corpse Candle," track number 1. With memories of most of those bands going through my mind, I listened to this album a little more intently, wondering what Weathered Statues would do with such great material.

I discovered that the band mostly just had fun with it. What I mean is that this isn't an album played in the tradition of this or that band but that it's an album for lovers of that kind of music in general. Weathered Statues play with great energy and they are quickly developing a style all their own. I really liked the various moods on this album. They blend the familiarity of pop with a moodiness I haven't heard performed quite like this since the 80s. I also really liked Jennie Mather's voice. It's clear but mysterious. Another definite highlight is Bryan Flanagan's bass. He's the one that gives the band that extra edge. Just check out the opening to "Corpse Candle" and see what you think. Recommended for fans of post-punk and the above-mentioned 80s bands. You know who you are.
