The mid-'70s Thin Lizzy love continues here on Second Edition, the sophomore release from California's Gygax, a band that contains current and former members of Gypsyhawk, Skeletonwitch, Sorcerer, Huntress, Warbringer, Mantic Ritual, Pentagram, among others. For this new Creator-Destructor release, bassist/vocalist Eric Harris is once again joined by guitarist Bryant Throckmorton, along with guitarist Jeff Potts and drummer Peter Campbell for a four piece that is well versed in classic heavy sounds.
If melodic twin guitar harmonies, tasty riffs, tight grooves, and strong vocals housed within catchy '70s styled hard rock fare is your thing, you've come to the right place. Most of these tracks here on Second Edition are memorable from the very first spin, the swirling twin guitar leads of "Dice Throwers & Rock 'n' Rollers" and "The Lascivious Underdark" are just delightful, and with Harris' vocals hinting at just enough Phil Lynnott, it's not hard to be reminded of the glory days of the mighty Thin Lizzy. "Pure Hearts" is instantly addicting, and wouldn't have sounded out of place on Lizzy's Jailbreak album, while "Song of the Silver Hands" adds a little bit of Deep Purple styled bluesy heavy rock to the proceedings. The darker, more atmospheric "Wish" is a melodic gem, featuring some of Harris' best vocals on the album and more of those delicious twin guitar harmonies, and the raucous "Second Wind" closes out the album in fine fashion, as savage riffs and intelligent melodies collide for what could have easily been a midnight jam between Lizzy and Blue Oyster Cult.
Second Edition shows that Gygax's debut Critical Hits was no fluke, as the band have once again put together another set of scorching '70s styled hard rockers that will leave any Thin Lizzy fan screaming with delight. Well done!
