Hooded Menace: Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed

There are days when there's no better choice than listening to Hooded Menace. For nearly 10 years, the band has demonstrated a commitment to writing some of the finest—and most crushing—doom out there. With this album, the band shows that they are in top form. The songs here are well-written and expertly performed. I know there have been some lineup changes here and there, but the band has lost nothing in terms of sound or quality.

For me, the best thing about this album is the way it weaves variety into each song so seamlessly. There are moments that still surprise me even though I've listened to this album 5-6 times over the last few weeks. Check out the way songs like "In Eerie Deliverance" take advantage of little changes to keep things interesting. Not only does it have a killer riff, but there's also a rather haunting passage with a female vocalist. All these little points of variety and difference make the album stronger. "Sempiternal Grotesqueries," the album's opener, is another highlight. Things start solid with a crushing riff and then wind around into new directions that are just as cool. Sometimes this means some killer guitar harmonies or some extra speed.

Ultimately, this is a killer new release. I definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you're unfamiliar with Hooded Menace. Every track shows off some amazing talent in both songwriting and performance. This band is also really good at creating a feeling of dread and doom that pervades everything. Highly recommended.
