Reisman, Marc: Strong Way

Marc Reisman has long been part of the Pittsburgh blues scene, first as a member of the Iron City Houserockers followed by heading the blues cover band Pep Boys. I was unfamiliar with the artist before discovering his debut solo album titled Strong Way, but upon checking him out on YouTube I can attest to the fact he is an outstanding harp player. For those familiar with the artist you might be expecting more of the same but that would be a mistake. On his new album the harmonica, while still present, has taken a backseat as this isn't so much about his harmonica playing as it is about the song. He has enlisted the help of no less than nine musicians and has relied heavily on songwriter Kurt Resch, who also supplies guitar, to flesh out eight of the nine tracks.

There is quite a lot of variety here like the reggae infused "House Of A Hundred Souls" with its spoken word narrative, the gritty Americana rock of "When", the mellow and moody "T.V. Eyes" and the celebratory title track that is positively addictive with its reggae-esque rhythms and grooves. Stellar harmonica work punctuates the moody "Shruti Blues", a melding of blues and Native American ethnic sounds.

Although the blues is very present the variety here should appeal to fans across many different genres. For more information check out the link below.
