Ignu: Lightningflash Flintspark

Ignu are a Polish stoner/blues rock/psych band comprised of Lubosz Majewski (vocals), Jan Szege (guitar/vocals), David Condis Y Troyano (bass), and Cyryl Skiba (drums), with their debut self-released album, titled Lightningflash Flintspark, featuring seven hard hitting and groove laden songs. These guys certainly have studied the classic heavy bands of the '70s, with influences such as Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Grand Funk Railroad, Cactus, Led Zeppelin, and Humble Pie roaring every which way, but with a healthy dollop of Graveyard, Witchcraft, Horizont, and Troubled Horse, all current staples of the retro hard rock scene from Sweden. "Checkered Room" busts out of the gate with plenty of venom, the guitars soaked in fuzz, the vocals strong, and the grooves molten. "Kwiat Paproci" is the lone Polish language track here, but it's a corker with plenty of tumultuous rhythms and crankin' riffs. The stoner-iffic "Snow" is mighty heavy, chock full of meaty doom riffs and spacey wah-wah psychedelia, while the uptempo "Best 'n' Blessed" brings to mind the MC5 as well as the early Alice Cooper Group, featuring some insanely slashing lead guitar work from Szege. "Heavy Debris" is pure late '60s psychedelia, a trend that follows over to "Lightningflash", which also has elements of funk as well as space rock, complete with a mid section that could have come from a Monster Magnet or Hawkwind jam. Final track "Endless Rift" is a near 8-minute journey into prog, post-rock, and psychedelia, with effects laden guitar passages, anguished vocals, and pounding drums, a haunting way to end this very enjoyable album.

Stoner/psych fans would be well advised to check out Lightningflash Flintspark, a very strong debut from a band we are sure to hear a lot about in the months and years ahead. Well done guys!
