'The Standards Trio' of Keith Jarrett (piano), Gary Peacock (double bass), and Jack DeJohnette (drums) are back with their latest live release for ECM Records, titled After the Fall. This double CD set was recorded in Newark, New Jersey in 1998, and marked Jarrett's return to the concert stage after a two year break from an illness. The trio tackle a wealth of songs from the Great American Songbook, as well as some familiar Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, and Bud Powell classics. Through it all, Jarrett's soaring piano melodies lead the charge, a stunning "The Masquerade is Over" sees the leader nimbly creating wonderful colors under which Peacock & DeJohnette rumble in unison, while the complex arrangement of "Scrapple From the Apple" substitutes Keith's cascading piano for Parker's original torrent of saxophone blasts to stunning effect. "Doxy" is simply pure class, and a charming rendition of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" adds a somewhat bluesy vibe to these otherwise intoxicating old school jazz & bebop classics. For proof of just how legendary Peacock & DeJohnette are, listed to how locked in the duo are on "One for Majid" and "Bouncin' With Bud", and when they take a solo spot, it's musical nirvana.
These three veteran jazz musicians have a ridiculously lengthy resume apart from each other, but much of their work together over the last few decades stacks up against any of it. This is a great live album of standards and classics by three virtuosos...don't miss it.
