Troll: Troll

Troll are a four piece doom/stoner act from Portland, Oregon who released this self-titled debut on cassette back in 2015 but were then signed not long after by Shadow Kingdom Records, who have decided to re-release the album in multiple formats so that metal audiences across the globe can hear the talent brimming within this band. Containing just five songs and clocking in at just over 30 minutes, Troll contains lengthy tunes that drip with doomy menace but also the adventurous nature of classic progressive rock. Opening cut "The Summoning" has plenty of massive riffs to go around, but it's the creepy atmosphere and haunting vocals that give it that extra special edge, which you can also hear on the crushing "The Witch", another menacing song with plenty of appeal. At just under 9-minutes in length, "An Eternal Haunting" is the longest track on the album, and kicks off with some gorgeous, lilting guitar, bass, and percussion (almost like vintage Opeth) before the fuzz laden riffage and pounding drums come into play, a back and forth battle between prog and doom that continues on for the duration of the song. The more upbeat, bulldozing "Infinite Death" is pure stoner goodness, the riffs fat & juicy, and the grooves addicting, while the mid-paced closer "Savage Thunder" is a must hear for any fan of Saint Vitus and early Black Sabbath, an ominous dirge with chilling vocals and effective guitar work.

The band are apparently quickly putting together the follow-up to this little gem, which is set for release later this year, so they are striking while the iron is still hot. Good stuff here, and a band to keep a very close eye on!
