Byyrth: Echoes from the Seven Caves of Blood

Byyrth's self-styled "vampiric black metal" will not be to everyone's liking, but it definitely has one thing going for it-purpose. There are plenty of other bands that lay claim to vampire-like sounds or moods but most of them are overly polished, as if their vampires came from romance books rather than actual coffins. Such bands want to act like vampires, but they don't want to get any blood on their fancy costumes. Byyrth has no place in that world. Their brand of vampire metal is always harsh and rasping, hardly the stuff of popular television or movie dramas.

The music on this album pushes against any concept of conventional melody, rhythm, or structure. Listeners will need a few minutes to adjust to the overall sound. For those unfamiliar with Byyrth, their music certainly sounds like black metal but it wants to capture the most aggressive and unpolished sound possible. For the most part, Byyrth succeeds. This is underground music for the die-hards-literally. Some listeners will find it off putting while others will think it ingenious. I liked a couple of tracks but this album won't be the soundtrack for my next outdoor walk. If I ever emerge from the grave as a vampire, maybe someone could throw on "Cry of the Wurdelak." That was a good song.
