Blood Red Saints: Love Hate Conspiracies

Blood Red Saints are a band for whom I have plenty of time for. I really dug their debut album Speedway released a couple of years back and I mostly enjoyed seeing them support Romeo's Daughter a while ago – and now that they have two albums under their belt they can ditch the Bon Jovi covers! Album number two sees two new recruits join original members Pete Godfrey, Rob Naylor (bass) and Lee Revill (guitars). Neil Hibbs (formerly of Arkhams Razor, Shy) and Andy Chemney (drums) are the men in question and the change appears to have been relatively painless in terms of the music. Lee Revill says that Love Hate Conspiracy is, "musically in a heavier direction than Speedway. We still wanted big melodic choruses but we wanted to toughen them up a bit too."

I'm not exactly sure that the work of Blood Red Saints can ever be described as 'heavy,' or 'tough,' but they are highly melodic and addictive and, ironically, in the same way which Bon Jovi were in the mid-1980s. Given that the band hail from the North West part of England this is an interesting development and very occasionally the album veers close to almost copycat Jovi-isms vocally (especially on "Arms Wide Open" which otherwise has an FM/Leppard feel to it) but equally there are some tremendous melodic rock tunes on offer. The guitar work is uniformly excellent throughout and "Sometimes" is a tune which I have returned to over and over again over the past few weeks. It very much seems like Blood Red Saints will be around for the long haul and this pleases me and it should please all fans of melodic rock.
