Distant Landscape: Insights
Distant Landscape is the brainchild of Italian musician Marco Spiridigliozzi. The debut album is titled Insights and is a very good atmospheric rock album with a strong leaning towards post rock/metal. The music is very melancholic with a dreamy flow and softly sung lead vocals which I found to be very pleasing on the ears. While the song structures are built upon the same framework there are softer and heavier elements, mostly based on guitar riffs and arpeggios which build into a wall of moodiness. Tracks like the achingly beautiful and hypnotizing "First Insight" are more mellow with slow builds of melodic instrumentation and riffs recalling bands like modern day Anathema. The male and female lead vocals and acoustic guitar are really quite gorgeous. In contrast, "The Desire" is heavy right from the start verging on melodic post metal while still retaining the atmosphere this album possesses in spades. The wall of sound guitar riffs are completely absorbing. Quiet guitar arpeggios and heavy guitar builds go back and forth on the equally excellent "The Change", another example of the band making the most of their post rock/metal template.
Sure there might not be a lot of variation between these seven tracks but the arrangements are so hook laden and the vocals so melodic that I wanted to play this again and again. If you are into the atmospheric side of rock and metal I strongly urge you to give Distant Landscape a listen. You just might be pleasantly surprised.
