Greta Van Fleet: From the Fires

Greta Van Fleet are the young US hard rock band that are quickly taking the world by storm with their exciting, modern take on the classic Led Zeppelin sound. From the Fires combines their debut 2017 EP Black Smoke Rising with four new tracks, essentially becoming their first full-length release. At roughly 30-minutes, From the Fires doesn't overstay its welcome, comes in, kicks your ass, and leaves you salivating for more. The band are comprised of vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist/keyboard player Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner, four extremely talented individuals who have certainly studied their classic Zeppelin albums well. Kiszka sounds just like a 20 year old Robert Plant in his prime, and he's paired up with the Jimmy Page influenced guitar skills of twin brother Jake and the thunderous rhythm section of younger brother Sam and best friend Danny.

Most of these songs are instantly memorable, addicting examples of vintage styled classic rock, such as the excellent "Safari Song", the bluesy "Change is Gonna Come" (what a vocal performance!), the hard driving "Edge of Darkness", and the lethal "Highway Tune", the latter seemingly like a long lost leftover from Zeppelin's fourth album, a distant cousin to "When the Levee Breaks". "Meet On the Ledge" combines Zeppelin styled folk with The Rolling Stones funky groove, and that Stones influence is again heard on the upbeat rocker "Talk On the Street". There are some great acoustic & electric guitar textures on the mix of funk, blues, and hard rock that is "Black Smoke Rising", and the ultra addicting "Flower Power" is a can't miss throwback to the late '60s/early '70s Woodstock generation, and would have sounded perfectly fine nestled in the middle of Zeppelin's debut album all those years ago.

This is brilliant stuff here, and for all those shouting the Kingdom Come comparisons, Greta Van Fleet clearly have captured something on this album that no band since the demise of the mighty Zeppelin have achieved. Killer vocals, outstanding guitar work, memorable songs...yep, this is a winner all around, the arrival of a band ready to take the rock world by storm. I'm on board.
