In that Amazon-like you-like-this-you-might-like-this way AFM Records are pretty pleased with this five track EP from Göttingen-based Asenblut. They describe Legenden as, "A walk on the tightrope that is nothing short of genius and that will set fans from Blind Guardian via Amon Amarth to Equilibrium ablaze." Well I like all those bands and I very much enjoyed Asenblut's 2016 album Berserker suggesting that, "If Manowar made Pagan Metal they would be Asenblut such is the overwhelming stench of power and machismo." Produced by Sebastian "Seeb"Leevermann (Orden Ogan) Legenden is very much more of the same and all the better for it.
Four of the five tracks are re-workings from 2009's Aufbruch and it's interesting to hear how the songs are represented almost a decade later though I'm pleased that the band has seen fit to actually seen fit to include a Manowar cover which works every bit as well as one would expect. There's a real sense of power and class across all the tracks on this EP. Arguably slightly heavier and less Pagany (is that a word?) than before but all the tracks don't just seep out of the speakers they run and smash the listener in the mush. Whilst Amon Amarth are a suitable comparison Asenblut are by no means mere copyists given the brutality of the rhythm section but they also add in a degree of power metal riffage which makes one very keen to hear the next full album from the gang.
