Ravenstine, Allen + Albert Dennis: Terminal Drive

Allen Ravenstine is an experimental synthesist formerly of the bands Red Krayon, Hy Maya and co-founder of Pere Ubu. In fact, Ravenstine was invited to join Pere Ubu by David Thomas after Thomas had heard part of Terminal Drive which Ravenstine was recording with string bassist Albert Dennis. The piece was never released and it has been reported that Ravenstine didn't think much of it at the time. Part of the piece did show up on a Pere Ubu boxset titled Datapanik in the Year Zero. However, in 2016 a cassette surfaced having the full recording of Terminal Drive which has now been released on Smog Veil Records.

Terminal Drive is a sixteen minute piece recorded at Motion Picture Sound, Cleveland, Ohio. I wish I could tell you that I enjoyed listening to this but unfortunately that is not the case. The weird synth ramblings, discordant noise and haphazard structure is just too avant-garde for my tastes and with a concerted lack of melody there isn't enough here to reel me in. You dear reader on the other hand might be totally enraptured by the unusual sounds of Terminal Drive. After all, it's just a matter of personal taste.
