hell bent: hell bent

The name hell bent may well be a new one on the scene, but with their number comprising members of Dropdead, Ulcer and Paindriver, wet behind the ears this lot are not. This short self titled offering is their first and a rollicking fourteen minutes or so it is. "Yeast" bites, snarls and snaps by way of introduction, a death-thrash expulsion providing 93 seconds of controlled angst. "Lord" may well be 48 seconds longer but it's no less succinct – there's no wastage, no waffle, just straight to the point rifferama that rages and roars. A few temporary changes in tempo are rolled out this time round, but only so the foot to the floor drum smacks can continue their mighty work in ever more stark surrounds.

Things then begin to evolve from there, "Canis Lupus Superion" more considered in its approach, even if it is no less aggressive, while "Bastard Curse Of Abraham" decides to pull things all the way back in and sit on a mid-paced groove that suggests once hell bent really get their feet under the table, all manner of interesting asides may appear. Admittedly by song's end we're are at full velocity again, just as "Condemned To Life" and "Scythian Horde" are too, the latter adding an unexpected 80s edge that's hugely infectious.

Short and worryingly sharp this debut from hell bent proves this fledgling act to be deft in attack and swift in execution. Hopefully a follow up will be equally rapid in appearing!
