Summoning: With Doom We Come

With Doom We Come is the latest Napalm Records release from Protector & Silenius, otherwise known as Summoning, a duo who have perfected the art of J. R. R. Tolkien themed atmospheric & progressive black metal. It's been five years since their last effort Old Morning's Dawn, and the Austrian act have once again crafted a pretty majestic affair here, eight mostly epic tracks steeped in symphonic & ambient elements woven around black metal flourishes. "Night Fell Behind" is a perfect marriage of the two, the grandiose keyboards and other textured instrumentation supporting the harsh vocals for maximum effect, while "Silvertine" just bristles with majestic might, the ragged vocals searing through a haze of distorted guitar riffs and orchestral keys. Moments of "Carcharoth" are actually quite beautiful, and "Herumor" also contains some splendid prog styled keyboards and folky passages. The one drawback here on With Doom We Come is the length of the songs and the album in general; many of the tracks tend to be a little overblown and ponderous, which offsets just a tad some of the truly breathtaking moments that are woven throughout the record. There's a lot of magic to be found here, but just be prepared to invest some serious time to uncover all of Summoning's musical art. Also, it's safe to say that With Doom We Come isn't an overly heavy album, so if you are looking for raging black metal, you've come to the wrong place. Quite classy stuff though, and a must for fantasy lovers of all ages.
