Shambles (Thai): Primitive Death Trance

I'm not sure what a primitive death trance looks like but this album is a good candidate for what it sounds like. Just listen to the title track on this album and you'll see what I mean. After you've heard that, you'll probably want to hear the rest of the album. The music is often very repetitive but the effect is not boredom but fascination. Shambles, formed in 1997, has worked in different styles, including grindcore and black metal, but they now find themselves drawn to the despairing and hypnotic qualities of death / doom. Part of the strength is their overall tone. The music has some polish but maintains a solid sense of underground metal. The guitars are especially heavy. Alongside them, the drums pound out a steady and relentless beat. They clear the mind and focus the attention on the death / doom style of the music. The vocals are also extremely heavy, growls that barely rise to the level of articulation. I couldn't understand a word but this band isn't trying to tell a specific story right now. This is all about creating an atmosphere that is equal parts heaviness and darkness. I enjoyed it.
