Emerald: Angels Of Oblivion

What do you do after you have been disbanded for thirty years? Well, you put out three albums in four years culminating with Angels Of Oblivion the new album from the metal band Emerald. The trio consists of Jeff Melin (guitar and vocals), Duane Hollis (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Will Jones (drums).

The album consists of eight tracks clocking in at a nice and tidy thirty-seven minutes beginning with the heavy burner "Devil's Law" where the galloping riffs turn into slower doominess and the vocals bear an ever so slight resemblance to Ozzy Osbourne. I really dig the vocals here and the guitar work is quite good with an excellent solo in the latter half before transitioning to a slower classic doom sound. The riffs come fast and slow in the heavy "Blind" including some great progressions and fills whereas the title track begins in mellow fashion with washes of cymbals and clean guitar chords before the heaviness kick in. I love the moody vibe and Melin's vocals are excellent. The huge guitar fuzz in "Rise Of Evil" along with a very cool moody instrumental break where the band utilizes awesome guitar effects makes for another highlight. The excellent backing vocals of Hollis adds another layer of sound making this my favourite track. That said, there are no bad tracks here so if you like your metal old school with a heavy helping of doom recalling Black Sabbath on occasion, Angels Of Oblivion will definitely be worth a listen. Highly recommended.
