Hazelrigg Brothers: Songs We Like

New Jersey born brothers George Hazelrigg (piano) and Geoff Hazelrigg (bass) have teamed with John O'Reilly Jr. (drums) to release their debut album Songs We Like. As you can probably surmise from the album's title these are reworked tunes that the brothers have been drawn to since their youth. The catch is these are complete reimaginings done in the jazz tradition. That said, even if you are not into jazz do not dismiss this CD without careful consideration as the trio playfully work around the original melodies with a high degree of creativity and passion.

The first track, a reworking of the classic Jethro Tull tune "Living in the Past" is superb. The bass and drum intro demonstrates just how talented these young musicians are and as the piano sets in motion the original melody I dare you not to be grooving to the music. I love how the piano adds little flourishes around the central theme while respecting Tull's original vision. The next track, Men At work's "Catch A Star" is a nice surprise and is another excellent rendition. The sumptuous bass and melodic piano work is played with finesse and a tremendous sense of melody. Fans of Led Zeppelin will be happy to hear "Ten Years Gone" and "What Is And What Should Never Be", the former with its wistful piano melody and wonderful cymbals and snare and the latter's minimalistic bluesy approach including some excellent bowed bass. The playing is just as inventive on Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9", The Police's "Spirits In The Material World" and Steely Dan's "King Of The World".

There are also a couple of classical pieces "Evening In The Country" and "Passacaglia, From The Daughters Of Zeus, Urania" which sound great as well. The piano work on 'Passacaglia' is exceptional.

To put it simply, this is an excellent album that just might pull in the open minded classic rock fan looking to expand their musical palette. Excellent stuff!
