Daysend: Severance

If you are a fan of thrash with an added (and rare) flair of melody, then you will really enjoy this Daysend release. Severance is chock full of catchy hooks and rhythms. Even if the sometimes grating screech of the hard rock vocal is not your game, you will still enjoy some nicely written songs and instrumentation. It's nice to hear Aaron Bilbija's double leads reminiscent of Megadeth and Iron Maiden. The drums of Wayne Morris and bass of Meredith Webster are tight and precise and add a good punch to the compositions: they do complement one another quite well. The cut to grab first is "Countdown". This one displays some actual singing by front man Simon Calabrese, and is probably the most commercial of the bunch.

Overall, Daysend is as good as any rock band you might hear on pop rock stations. I am not sure if this is a compliment or merely a statement of the times. The production is good and the songs are well edited. Having actual lead guitar mixed in with heavy rhythms makes this more enjoyable for the musically inclined, although true progressives will probably not find this cd to be their cup of tea.
