Ghostly Beard: Infinite

Is that a space ship approaching over the horizon??? No, hold on, it's a Ghostly Beard, obviously…

Having a created an otherworldly alter-ego for himself (the press release tells tales of enigmatic bigfoots, woods and visionary artistic entities...), Patrick Talbot is Ghostly Beard. Infinite is his debut EP and it comes laden with incorrect preconceptions. Firstly I expected a band called Ghostly Beard to be a stoner doom bruiser, then when I saw the logo and EP art, I factored in some space age concept themed shenanigans. Wrong on both counts as personal, if rather literal lyrics which talk of lives, journeys and relationships are recounted over vibes that remind most strongly of Pink Floyd, while offering up some other jumping off points. The mood may be very Gilmour but the guitars are often much more biting – if still dreamy – while the beats can veer into electronica. And yet the solo on the meandering and hugely memorable "Close Your Eyes" screams of Floydian landscapes with big round lights in the sky (well, at the back of the stage). All jesting aside, it's convincing stuff.

However, with only five tracks on show, where things come a little unstuck is through the lack of variance as you become "Frozen In Time" and admit you are not "Limitless". What starts out as captivating and just the right side of daring, somehow, only four songs down the line, feels safe and smooth. Talbot's voice certainly fits his surrounds and yet things all too quickly become confined by the lack of alteration in his delivery. In terms of his guitar prowess, the sometimes jazzy tones and sometimes proggy workouts are all damn near spot on the money, cleverly leaving the main man's skills plain to see, if never over exposed.

I can't lie, I have on the whole really enjoyed my first encounter with the Ghostly Beard and yet I still can't shake the feeling that there's just not quite enough going on here to keep you coming back for more. Yet that's exactly what I've been doing, so more fool me and kudos to Mr. Talbot. If you're looking for a laid back evening, maybe it's time to lie back and stroke your Ghostly Beard?
