Elvenking: Secrets of the Magick Grimoire

I absolutely consider myself a fan of Italian folk power metal band Elvenking. I've got all their albums, I've interviewed them and they're lovely and I'm excited that I will finally get to see them in the UK next February yet I'm not fully on board with Secrets of the Magick Grimoire just yet. I like it but I haven't fallen hopelessly in love with it yet. This could be because their record company is one of those which stream for review purposes before making downloads available after the release date and I haven't lived with it as long as I'd like but a deadline is a deadline so here goes.

Everything that one would expect from an Elvenking album is present and correct. "Invoking The Woodland Spirit" is, to use the often-quite-annoying adjective, epic. "Draugen's Maelstrom" is remarkably heavy whilst "The One We Shall Follow" burrows its way into your head like a malevolent beaver. Snowy Shaw (Dream Evil, Dimmu Borgir, King Diamond, Therion,) leaps out of the 'Where are they now?' file to provide vocals on "At The Court Of The Wild Hunt" and this is always a good thing – as indeed are Elvenking, I just feel like in a year's time I may appreciate this one even more than I do now.

Elvenking: Secrets of the Magick Grimoire

My Score:

The always eclectic Italian symphonic power/folk metal act Elvenking are back with their latest effort for AFM Records, the expertly titled Secrets of the Magick Grimoire. Chock full of chugging guitars, keyboards, strings, acrobatic drumming, choirs, and all things bombastic, this new album is another feast for the ears for Elvenking fans. As always, their charming mascot appears on the excellent cover art, and this AFM release contains a number of bonus tracks to really fill out the package. "Invoking the Woodland Spirit" kicks things off in fine fashion, the chorus ultra catchy, the backing vocal choirs in full force, the keyboards symphonic, and the guitar licks sizzling. It's one fist pumping, air guitar generating, pint glass raising anthem after another from there, the arrangements always engaging, and the vocal passages extremely well done with hooks aplenty at every turn. Truth be told, you really have to be a fan of this kind of thing to really enjoy Secrets of the Magick Grimoire; for the most part, this is happy go lucky stuff, but really well done, the metal perfectly meshing with the folk elements and the heavy & proggy moments just enough to keep things always intriguing.

Easily one of the best folk-metal bands going today, Elvenking have created another easy winner here.
