Dying Fetus: Wrong One to Fuck With

I wasn't expecting to like this album because I've heard so many extreme albums lately that I thought I'd had enough. With every band trying to be more extreme and complex than the others, it's easy to get cynical. If every band is the biggest, the baddest, and the most extreme, things will quickly get out of hand. And yet, Dying Fetus provides to be as good as they are brash. The cover art (and the title) capture the band's ambition: to create something so crushing that the competition will simply bow out. For the most part, they've succeeded. The music here is not only a strong statement but a claim for the crown. The music is marked by complexity and change, not just brutality. The rhythms shift and change and the breakdowns are solid and exciting. I appreciated the vocal variety and the killer guitar playing most. Check out "Unmitigated Devastation" and "Panic Amongst the Herd."
