Secret Rule: The Key to the World

Symphonic metal has another adherent in Secret Rule, a multi-national ensemble of talented players seeking to lend their talents to a genre exploding with creativity and vibrant urgency. The track "The Song of the Universe" is a perfect introduction to this group's unique signature on symphonic progressive metal. As with the tracks "Twin Flames" and "A Reverie" the lead singer is in excellent position to propel these songs into the stratosphere of seductive rock stories.

It's not until mid-album with "My Realm" and "Imaginary World" does this band start to unleash their collective power as a group to be reckoned with especially in the area of lead guitar where it's allowed to take us to progressive heights. The Key to the World is Secret Rule's third release and not surprisingly a breakthrough effort in the sense that they have already forged their style and sound apart of from others. I have yet to hear any homages or direct influences from great players that came before them.

The ballad "No More" is beautifully somber and befitting the vocalist who is capable of emoting passion but staying a metal member in good standing. And right from that moment they move into "Trip of Destiny" and "I'm You" two tracks that a punk-progressive twist and run with it to very satisfying results. The final track "100 Poets" is a song I recommend they end each concert with because it truly showcases all the elements of this band in slightly over four minutes. I particularly point out the drummer who keeps this effort exciting and edgy. Secret Rule is no longer a secret. Time to add to the metal playlist for 2017.
