Psychosis is the fourth release from Cavalera Conspiracy, featuring the legendary Max & Iggor Cavalera, ex of Sepultura, alongside guitar phenom Marc Rizzo. Once again combining classic thrash with some death & black metal influences, Psychosis sees the band firing on all cylinders and taking no prisoners along the way. Kick off track "Insane" busts out of the gate with pummeling ferocity, the bands thrash attack lethal as always with barnstorming riffs, blazing solos, and Iggor's acrobatic drums. Things take on a more doomy tone with the slow, grinding "Terror Tactics", but the pace picks up again for the super crunch of "Impalement Execution", Max's vocals deadly over a torrent of terrific riffs. "Spectral War" also provides plenty of headbanging moments, Rizzo firing off some blazing leads over Max's potent riffing, while "Crom" offers up some speedy black metal styled arrangements, yet it still sounds perfectly Cavalera Conspiracy. "Hellfire" is where things get a little odd, as tribal & industrial elements come into play, but the band then leap back in with the raging, brutal death-thrash of "Judas Pariah", easily the most pummeling track here. The title cut is a cool, ethic flavored workout for Iggor that also sees more industrial elements appear, and the album closes with the boiling trash maelstrom that is "Excruciating".
Ultimately, Psychosis is another fine extreme metal album from Cavalera Conspiracy. I don't think it quite hits the high mark of Sepultura's Machine Messiah from earlier this year, but both bands have distanced themselves from each other in recent years so it's not like that matters much anymore.
