Dragonhammer: Obscurity

Obscurity? Really? This is too much of an open goal even for me so here goes…Dragonhammer were founded in 1999 and have produced 2001 - The Blood Of The Dragon, 2004's Time For Expiation, which was followed in 2013 by The X Experiment and Blood Of The Dragon (MMXV edition) and another expanded edition; Time For Expiation (MMXV edition) in 2015 but (and he's where the ball hits the back of the net,)the band have been in relative obscurity in terms of sales and mainstream acceptance.

I can't imagine a world where Obscurity will rectify this situation but if you like your power metal with both symphonic and progressive elements then this album may be right for you. There are singalong tunes like "Children Of The Sun", nifty guitar work from new man Flavio Cicconi but the star of the piece is Giulio Cattivera on keyboards – the intro to "Fighting The Beast" being his best contribution. In truth, this is an utterly solid, resolutely unspectacular album which is suitably confident in its use of genre conventions but not quite able to stretch them into something more which may make it stand out from the pack.
