Down 'n' Outz, for the uninitiated is a band featuring Def Leppard's Joe Elliott , Quireboys Paul Guerin, Guy Griffin and Keith Weir alongside much travelled drummer Phil Martini and bassist Share Pedersen of Vixen fame. The overwhelming majority of their output are covers of Mott the Hoople and Mott-based spin-offs although the versions of Elton John's majestic "Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" are arguably the standout selections on the albums which they appear.
Clearly Ian Hunter's work requires being treated with a pretty high degree of reverence and certainly that is the case but there's a rollicking, loose vibe on all the recordings but especially on the new live album The Further Live Adventures Of… which one might absolutely expect from a band which has a number of Quireboys in it as low down dirty rock 'n' roll is very much their thing and Paul Guerin and Guy Griffin interweave their guitars in telekinetic tandem at all times. Now, once upon a time I suggested that Joe Elliott might not be the strongest vocalist on the planet but on these relatively relaxed, laid back recordings he's in his element and for me, sounds better than he has in Def Leppard for many years. I appreciate that the audience for Joe Elliott singing Mott the Hoople is pretty niche all three of the albums are well worthy of investigation and the live album is new and not a re-issue.
