FLOW (Will Ackerman / Fiona Joy / Lawrence Blatt / Jeff Oster): FLOW

Now, I am not one to listen to new age music all that much but this album titled FLOW, led by Will Ackerman seems to have caught my ear. Since I prefer music a tad heavier and truth be told I avoided the new age genre like the plague, this has somewhat caught me by surprise. Joining Ackerman (guitar) are Fiona Joy (piano, vocals), Lawrence Blatt (acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele) and Jeff Oster (trumpet, flugelhorn). Guest artists include Marc Shulman (guitar), Tony Levin (bass), Jeff Haynes (percussion), Sam Bevan (bass) , Eugene Friesen (cello) and Tom Eaton (guitar, bass).

This is an incredibly relaxing listen. The music cascades in gentle waves as piano, delicate guitar and shrouded blanket melodies of flugelhorn and trumpet slowly evolve over your senses. The builds are slow and carefully crafted with a delicate touch, each instrument adding clarity to the next as each piece slowly evolves. The songs are similar so this isn't something to reach for when you want a whole lot of variety. However, when you just want to lose yourself in some gently caressed melodies, the subtle ambience of FLOW might just be what you're searching for. Recommended.
