Iron Savior: Reforged - Riding On Fire

I feel myself to be quite fortunate that I've got every Iron Savior CD stretching back to the eponymous 1997 release all the way up to last year's Titancraft. Some people are not so fortunate which is problematic given label issues. "We can't re-release our albums from the Noise Records years in their initial form", Savior's main man Piet Sielck says, "but we are free to re-record songs from these albums. We've approached this opportunity with a lot of enthusiasm".

Enthusiasm is something that Iron Savior do well. They are so enthusiastic about heavy metal it is true and this has traditionally shone through throughout the band's career and does so here as well. Tracks are cherry-picked from the first seven years of the band's career and one listen invites the listener to enquire as to why Iron Savior are not as renowned as their contemporaries Helloween for instance. The songs are universally simple and catchy without being too dumb and although I am disappointed that they haven't re-recorded "Made of Metal" from 2001's Dark Assault I can't complain too much about the song choices and this is a good place to sample the band for the first time if you haven't had the pleasure thus far.

Iron Savior: Reforged - Riding On Fire

My Score:

With Reforged-Riding On Fire, power metal veterans Iron Savior have revisited and re-recorded a large selection of songs from their early catalog, due in part to many of those albums being long out of print and reissues not possible due to contractual reasons. So, why not just re-record them with 2017 technology, right? This new AFM release contains 2 CDs and 19 Iron Savior classics from their Noise Records era, and is a perfect compilation for those who perhaps don't have any of those old albums and want a potent, updated sampling of some of that material. Old favorites such as "Battering Ram", "For the World", "Watcher In the Sky", "Tales of the Bold", and "Atlantis Falling" are here in all their renewed glory, Piet Sielck's vocals soaring over crunchy riffs, dueling twin lead guitars, and plenty of double kick drumming throughout. The band sound like they had a blast revisiting these songs once again, and the production of Reforged is stellar from start to finish. Just listen to the mountainous power of "Brave New World", and you have to scratch your head at just why Iron Savior aren't as well known as acts such as Sabaton, Primal Fear, Gamma Ray, Helloween, and Hammerfall.
