Act of Defiance: Old Scars, New Wounds

With ex-members of Megadeth, Shadows Fall and Scar The Martyr, Act of Defiance is something of a modern day 'Supergroup'. With their well received 2015 debut, Birth And The Burial, 2017 spawns their sophomore release, Old Scars, New Wounds (Metal Blade Records) and their technical prowess is once again on full display. Punishment is inflicted with a Thrash, HardCore brutality and delivered with mechanical precision that is easily awe-inspiring.

Guitar Shredder and former Megadeth mainstay, Chris Broderick, is the main focus of Act of Defiance, and this attention is well garnered. Broderick lowers the boom as soon as you press play with the opening, angular shred-tastic riffing of "M.I.A. and he never lets up on the gas pedal from here on out. The stranglehold on songs like the manic, "Molten Core", "Circle of Ashes" or "Conspiracy of the Gods" is a tight and groove-heavy one and while also infusing a bit of melodic flavor within. Singer, Henry Derek, offers his best clean and guttural growling throughout this methodical and note frenzied 11 track album.

Old Scars, New Wounds is uber tight sounding record with a killer guitar tone by Monsieur Broderick and a stellar rhythm section made up of drummer Shawn Drover and bass player, Matt Bachand. Act of Defiance have made a statement with this 2nd release and are indeed set upon making their mark in the Modern Metal world with this intense record.
