Wonderland Park: Just Get In

Just Get In is the debut album from Wonderland Park, an instrumental trio comprised of guitar virtuoso Allen Hinds, bassist Peter Hastings, and drummer Chris Wabich. Combining bits of jazz-rock fusion, Southern Rock, and flat out shred guitar, Just Get In is a joy to listen to, whether you are a fan of instrumental based guitar music or not. At the heart of the album of course is Hinds, a truly special player who can crank out some blistering leads as well as tug at your heart with an equally impressive melodic phrase. "All Due Respect" kicks things off in fine fashion, a bluesy track with some solid grooves and tasty lead guitar melodies, while the lengthy title track is a scorching jam fueled by some lethal solos from Hinds. For "Bobby's Big Wheel" the trio add in a touch of funk to their rock stew, complete with weaving, snaking guitars and mesmerizing rhythms. The guitarist digs into his jazzy bag of tricks for "Barron's Crossing", sort of like a cross between Larry Carlton and Danny Gatton, and the lengthy "Truth Be Told" again sees all sorts of jazz-fusion styled explorations by the guitarist, reminding at times of the great Mike Stern. The trio bounce back for some upbeat roots rock on the groove laden "Spittin' Image", and go deep into the blues for the closer "A Far Cry", complete with some really classy lead guitar work and slide from Hinds.

Filled with some soaring melodies and sizzling musical passages, Just Get In announces the arrival of a hot new trio on the scene, and further proof of Allen Hinds' ascent to guitar hero status.

Wonderland Park: Just Get In

My Score:

Guitarist Allen Hinds has quite the resume having played with a number of big names such as Roberta Flack and Natalie Cole in addition to being an instructor at Musicians Institute. This all-instrumental affair revolves around the diverse playing of Hines who exhibits a lot of fluid lead guitar work above the mostly mellow, jammy foundations that are laid down by bassist Peter Hastings and drummer Chris Wabich. There are moments where the band catches fire, helping to build the tension beneath Hinds solo work. The title track starts with some nice finger picked playing, and slowly begins to burn as Hinds really gets cooking with his guitar. Per their website, they are self-described as “playing rootsy Avant funky modern jam whatever. The band finds their groove, and Hinds does his thing over the top. He’s an interesting player and displays a lot of excellent technique throughout. You’ll hear Hendrix influenced chording, then fingerpicking, and his lead work covers a lot of ground. Unfortunately, the compositions fail to hold my attention for long, and even though they are mostly in the 4â€"5-minute range, they often seem to meander. Hinds is someone I plan to investigate further, as I have to believe he has plenty to say musically beyond this group. If you enjoy laid back jammy material, you may find this one works for you just fine.
